Background

The latter half of the last century resurgent tremendous development in space technologies, especially in military field and outer space exploration and harnessed to save the vital and strategic goals. On the other hand the commercial (civilian) and peaceful use of space technology begun in the early seventies by launching the (Landsat) groups by the United States, followed by greater step in mid-eighties, where French (SPOT) series satellites were launched with 10 m resolution.

Observers and strategists agreed that the role of satellites in peace is no less important than their role in conflicts and may be an extent. In fact satellites played a crucial role to avoid armed conflicts between east and west during the cold war, due to the prior knowledge of capabilities and potential of each side showed in satellite images, where fateful decisions can be made. It was relied mainly upon satellite data to reduce proliferation of WMD, arms race and prohibited weapon. It was also used to implement international conventions and treaty on the cease-fire along the armistice lines between many countries. Finally satellites will continue to circle the globe to monitor demilitarized, tension and hot zone.

Present and Future

The tremendous development in space technologies and the race between international companies to achieve significant progress in remote sensing science and earth observation from space, in addition to the satellite images high resolution and geometric rigidity; confirms the extent of the utmost importance to adopt these technologies as it becomes a national demand to meet the needs of local and regional markets. This technology derives its importance from being an effective means to obtain information about an area that can not be accessed, due to natural factors or other prohibitions. It’s also valuable method to get fast and frequent information flow to facilitate monitoring operations.

Space Data Establishment for Information Technology (SDEIT)

SDEIT is a Saudi establishment that provides services, training and technical, administrative and financial consultations in the fields of space technologies, remote sensing (RS), geographical information system (GIS), databases (DBMS), global positioning system (GPS), automated vehicle location (AVL), science and technology and innovations, survey and earth sciences and relevant software and hardware.

We have a strong determination and affirmed persistence to move these technologies to unprecedented dimensions in accordance with world scientific standards and specifications.
